Sign language open house

LaGuardia Community College (L.C.C.) will host an open house on Wednesday, April 2 for its American Sign Language-English Interpretation Program. Current students, recent graduates, faculty and staff will be available to answer questions. In addition, there will be a presentation and lab demonstration.

The event, which will run from 6 until 7:30 p.m., will be held in the college’s E-building (room E-500) at 31-10 Thomson Avenue in Long Island City. Seating is limited so those who wish to attend should reserve a space by calling 718-482-5313 or e-mailing cwork@lagcc.cuny.edu.

Free performance on April 4




LaGuardia Community College will host a performance on Friday, April 4 of two deaf theater artists - CJ Jones and Monique Holt. The free event is open to the public. In his one-man show, CJ Jones Lives, Jones combines voice, American Sign Language and mime to paint colorful pictures of his life. Holt, a story artist, will perform ‘Ms. Zee Duur’s Locket,’ an original play about a woman who realizes that “You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone.”

The performance, which begins at 7 p.m., will be held in the College’s Little Theatre, located at 47th Avenue and Van Dam Street in Long Island City. For more information, call the Program for Deaf Adults at 718-482-5324 or email PDA@lagcc.cuny.edu.

Later that day, performers from the award-winning Buglisi Dance Theatre are scheduled to take the stage at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center.

The performance, which begins at 8 p.m., will held in LPAC’s Mainstage Theatre, located at 47th Avenue and Van Dam Street in Long Island City.

Modern privacy laws discussion

Arthur Miller, a nationally known attorney and author who has served as legal adviser for “Good Morning America” and “Court TV,” will deliver the twelfth annual Telsey Lecture at The Reform Temple of Forest Hills, located at 71-11 112th Street, on Sunday, April 6 at 10 a.m. His topic will be “Is Big Brother Watching You? Privacy Issues in the 21st Century.”

The lecture is open to the public, and the cost to attend is $45 and includes a brunch. For reservations, call The Reform Temple of Forest Hills at 718-261-2900.

Discussion of state and city affairs

The United Community Civic Association in Astoria will hold a meeting on Thursday, April 4 to discuss “In What State (Condition) Is … New York State? New York City?” The meeting will be held at the Augustana Lutheran Church, located at 69-05 Ditmars Boulevard in Astoria. Assemblymember Michael Gianaris and State Senator George Onorato will speak about the state, and Councilmember Peter Vallone, Jr., is scheduled to speak about the city.

In addition, updates will be given at the meeting about the planned FedEx Ground facility in Astoria, the free bus tour of LaGuardia Airport, and the “senior” discount to be made available at the Pistilli Grand Manor Condominiums. In addition, plans for the community health fair, scheduled for June 7, and the barbeque, scheduled for June 19, will be discussed. Refreshments will be available.

Corona, Sunnyside CBs to meet

During Community Board 4’s monthly meeting, slated for Tuesday, April 1 at 7:30 p.m., Rachel McCormick, the Community Affairs Associate for Queens Library, is scheduled to talk about the library system’s budget and the potential loss of six-day service. In addition, there will be a vote on State Liquor Authority (SLA) applications, and attendees will hear reports from the transportation, ULURP/Zoning/Housing, Youth, Consumer Affairs, Environmental, Health, Parks and Postal Committees. Touro College health fair

Touro College School of Health Sciences will host a health fair on Sunday, April 13. The free public event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the college’s Long Island campus, located at 1700 Union Boulevard in Bay Shore. Complimentary food and refreshments will be offered.

Among the participants will be health science students who will be staffing exhibits where glucose screening, blood pressure readings, bone density evaluations and other activities will be offered. For children, face painting will be available. Members of the Bay Shore Fire Department, accompanied by a fire truck will talk about safety rules and fire prevention.
