Dinner at the Mansion

BY VICTORIA SCHNEPS-YUNIS

What a treat it is to drive up to the de Seversky Center and view the majestic former home of the multi-millionaire Alexander de Seversky and to know that dinner is waiting for you.

The beautifully restored early 20th century mansion sits on the campus of the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) just off Northern Boulevard only 20 minutes from Queens.

Although the facility is a major location for special occasions like weddings, birthdays and anniversaries, it also hosts lunches in the glass-enclosed garden room on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

The evening we visited featured a Cabaret Club dinner. It was held in the adjoining wood-paneled, chandeliered ballroom.

The talented jazz singers and piano player, presented by Kate Beckman entertained us during the evening.

White-glove service was provided by professionally-trained waiters from the culinary school of NYIT.

There is a three-course meal for $49 per person. The only extras are tax, service and beverages.

The dinner began with a choice of appetizers. We chose the chilled Yukon Gold potato soup with lump crab meat and chive olive.

My husband Stu had mansion salad with Mesclun greens, dried cranberries, candied walnuts, gorgonzola cheese and champagne vinaigrette.

The soup was different and delicious - not too creamy and most refreshing on a summer night.

For our main course, we had a choice of Tuna, Cornish Game Hens or Veal Scaloppini. Each was beautifully prepared.

For dessert, we had a mochachino tort - not too sweet and again a unique choice to try. There was also a fresh fruit plate - of course we all shared!

I must compliment the attentive, friendly and professional wait staff. My glass was never empty and any request was quickly filled.

Reservations are accepted for lunch, dinner and events. There is even a museum tour. On site and off premises catering is available. For more information, call 516-686-7675.
