Family fun for allPHOTOS BY PAUL HUNTER
The 7th Annual Detective Keith L. Williams Park (formerly Liberty Park) Family Day was held on Saturday, August 23, from noon to 4 p.m. Families enjoyed an afternoon of free entertainment, games, inflatable rides, arts & crafts, free health screenings and food. In addition to the festivities, there were also free cancer screening tests provided for eligible women in attendance, including mammography, colon and pap tests. Detective Keith L. Williams (1954-1989) was born and raised in this Jamaica neighborhood. He began his career in the Department of Corrections, where he worked until his appointment to the New York City Police Academy in 1981. Williams served in Bushwick's 83rd Precinct and the Public Morals divisions in south Brooklyn and Queens. He was promoted to detective in 1987 and assigned to the Queens District Attorney's Squad. Detective Williams was killed on November 13, 1989, while transporting a prisoner from court to Riker's Island. |
