Mary Louis scholars get national nodBY VICTOR G. MIMONIFour young women at the Mary Louis Academy in Jamaica Estates have garnered national accolades this year, the school announced recently.
Senior Camille Lawhead has been chosen as a semi-finalist in the 2008-2009 National Merit Scholarship Program. To reach this plateau indicates that Lawhead is firmly ranked in the top two percent of over 1,000,000 students who took the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) or National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as a junior. She was also named an Outstanding Student by the National Achievement Scholarship Program, which recognizes exceptional black American high school students. Seniors Elizabeth Evangelou, Toni Iurcotta and Monique Melendez have all received Letters of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The commendations were based on their outstanding scores on the PSAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in their junior year. Only 34,000 out of more than 1,000,000 (about one-third of one percent) are so commended. Moreover, Julia Amadeo, also a senior, and Melendez were named as scholars by the National Hispanic Recognition Program. The young ladies are currently the pride of the school, located at 176-21 Wexford Terrace in Jamaica. |
