24th Annual Langston Hughes Kwanzaa Celebration

The Langston Hughes Library will host the 24th Annual Langston Hughes Kwanzaa Celebration on Friday, December 12 and Saturday, December 13.

The celebration will begin at 4:30 p.m. Friday with film screenings and discussions of “Kwanzaa: An African Celebration” and “The Black Candle.”




There will also be a lecture on Friday entitled “Is Kwanzaa Significant to the Black Community in the 21st Century?” that will be led by Dr. Leonard Jeffries.

The festivities will continue on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The activities will include a crafts fair, principles of Kwanzaa and libation ceremony, music, song, folktales, dancing, workshops and food.

The Langston Hughes Library is located at 100-01 Northern Boulevard in Corona. For more information, call 718-651-1100.

68th Annual Winter Concert
Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College
Saturday, December 13


The Queens College Choral Society will hold its 68th Annual Winter Concert at 8 p.m. on Saturday, December 13.

The music director of the society is James John. The guest conductor will be Maurice Peress. An orchestra will join the Queens College Choral Society.

During the concert, the group will perform J.S. Bach’s cantata, Das neugeborene Kindelein BWV 122, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D Minor.

Tickets are $20 or $18 for seniors, students and alumni and $5 for students with a valid Queens College ID.

Cookbook Launch Event
Queens Museum of Art
Sunday, December 14


A cookbook launch event for The Healthy Taste of Corona will be held at the Queens Museum of Art from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, December 14.

The Healthy Taste of Corona “includes 30 recipes collected from restaurants, elected officials and community-based organizations in the Heart of Corona Initiative. It showcases traditional foods from a variety of countries reflecting the diversity of cultures in the neighborhood, while at the same time updating the recipes to make them healthier.”

During the launch event, there will be food tasting and cultural performances.
