QPTV, assisted by The Queens Courier, wins national awardQueens Public Television (QPTV) has received national recognition for its live 2009 election coverage, hosted by The Queens Courier publisher Victoria Schneps-Yunis.
The Alliance for Community Media, a national organization that represents community television stations across the U.S., awarded QPTV first place in the “Live Format-Professional” category and honorable mention in the “Democracy in Action-Professional” category for its 2009 Hometown Video Awards competition. The winning coverage, “Queens Public Television Presents: Queens Vote 2008,” consisted of more than two hours of airtime in multiple locations including on-the-street interviews, in-studio political punditry and news-set election results. QPTV executive director Dan Leone said his organization has won national awards before, but “Queens Vote 2008” was the station’s first attempt at live coverage of local and national elections. “We’re very excited,” Leone said, adding that, through the hard work of many people, the station provided “a great resource to the Queens community.” Asked if QPTV has any live political coverage in its future, Leone referred to the upcoming mayoral, city council and other races and said, “I think it’s going to be very important this year, so we’re planning it already.” |
