Three killed at sewage plantA father and son died, along with another man, at a Jamaica sewage plant when they were reportedly overcome by fumes.
According to police, Shalom Dahan, 53, and Harel Dahan, 23, of Brooklyn, had been cleaning out the 18-foot-deep cesspool at Royal Waste Services Inc., when the son fell into the well. His father then retrieved a ladder and descended into the well in an effort to rescue him. When the pair, who worked for the S. Dahan Sewer Specialists, failed to emerge, Rene Francisco Rivas, 52, a Royal Waste employee, attempted to help. Reports say that four feet of stagnant water was at the bottom of the well, where FDNY officials measured hydrogen sulfide levels at a reported 200 parts per million. The gas, which smells like “rotten eggs,” can be lethal at 50 to 100 parts per million after 10 minutes, according to reports. The three men were removed from the well by firefighters and were pronounced dead at the scene. “They lost their lives working to support their families in a very dangerous profession,” said Councilmember Leroy Comrie. “It is my hope that a thorough investigation will reveal why this tragic accident occurred and what our city can do to prevent such incidents, so that no one else will have to endure what the Dahan and Rivas families are facing now." |
