Kids benefit from JCPenney shoppers

Local children will continue to have fun and learn at the South Queens Boys and Girls Club (SQBGC) thanks to funds raised through a recent “Round-Up” program at the JCPenney department store in Queens Center Mall.

“With the $1,749 raised from Queens Center JCPenney’s recent ‘Round-Up’ program, even more children can benefit from SQBGC afterschool programs,” said director Carol Simon. “We appreciate JCPenney’s support as we work towards our goal of providing high-quality afterschool programs that provides academic, physical and social development for children in Richmond Hill,” she said.

From October 16 through the 25, JCPenney customers were welcomed to “round-up” their purchases to the nearest whole dollar and donate the difference to local afterschool programs that provide at-risk children with access to enlightening activities, hoping to inspire them to be socially responsible, strong, and smart. The program was held simultaneously with the SQBGC event to celebrate “Lights On Afterschool” (LOA), the largest national afterschool awareness day, with more than 7,500 events held throughout the nation. For the 10th anniversary of the event, SQBGC organized a LOA event that included an open house, arts and crafts and sports competitions.

“We know we need to do more to keep up with the rising demand of afterschool programs locally,” said Joie Johnston, JCPenney Store Manager. “We look forward to continuing our strong, long-term commitment to this issue and appreciate our customers for their support of this worthy cause.”
