Holiday events at GAHS

The Greater Astoria Historical Society (GAHS) has announced two free events for the upcoming holiday season.

On Saturday, December 5 at 1 p.m., the GAHS will show the movie “It Happened on Fifth Avenue.” The film will be shown at the GAHS and popcorn will be served.

Two days later, on Monday, December 7 at 7 p.m. the GAHS will host a history of Astoria Park and holiday party. Here, you can learn about the history of Astoria Park and the old mansions that once graced the shoreline of the East River.

Green Shores NYC will participate in this program as the GAHS explores the past of this beautiful park and its future. Green Shores NYC will talk about their present initiatives to protect and preserve this waterfront gem. Holiday carols, candy canes and presents will be available at the party.

The GAHS is located at 35-20 Broadway, 4th Floor, and is open every Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. and Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

To learn more about these events and others, visit: www.astorialic.org or call the GAHS at 718-278-0700.

Forum on hate’s impact on society

How does hate impact our society? That question will be addressed at a forum to be held at LaGuardia Community College on November 20. The event is free and open to the public.

The event will feature keynote speakers Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott of Education and Community Development and Commissioner Patricia Gatling of the New York City Commission on Human Rights. Following the speeches will be a panel discussion headed by experts in the educational and health care fields and from the corporate sector.

The forum, entitled, “Creating an Inclusive Society: Revisiting the American Dream,” will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the College’s Little Theatre at 31-10 Thomson Avenue, Long Island City.

There is no fee and seating is limited. If interested in attending, please register by calling 212-983-4800, ext 120; or emailing Queensforum@gmail.com; or visiting www.communityuplink.net/AmericanDream.htm.

The event is sponsored by the Queens Forum, a joint venture by LaGuardia and the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York.

Vendors sought for craft fair

Martin Luther High School will host a holiday craft and vendor fair on Sunday, December 6 at the Maspeth Avenue School. In addition to hand-made crafts and gift items, vendors scheduled to appear include Tastefully Simple, Avon and PartyLite. The Maspeth Thrift Shop will also have an assortment of new clothes and items available for purchase.

Vendors interested in participating in the fair are invited to call 718-894-4000 to request an application.

CTK to honor Stella Maris scholarships
