The New York Mets Are...Heck I Don't Even Know AnymoreMets BlogBy Joseph Pascullo Hello Mets fans, welcome back once again! Well, as Jason Bay continues to silently disrespect the Mets generosity by not even being courteous enough to reject their proposal that he clearly does not want, Omar Minaya has turned his attention towards two other free agents. Let’s take a look.
The Mets inked knuckleballer R.A. Dickey to a minor league pact. Bleh, whatever. He's 35, the guy has had a superbly subpar career up to this point with a career ERA OF 5.43, but setting a career low in ERA last season in 35 games with the Minnesota Twins, an oh so lovely 4.62 clip. Yikes. Thankfully it's nothing more than a minor league deal providing depth for both the rotation and the bullpen. But I mean...judging by the performances this guy has displayed, he's not providing that much more depth for the Mets than you and I are sitting at our computers. As for Omar's second acquisition, he signed former LA Angel Kelvim Escobar to a 1 year major league pact worth 1.25 million dollars. I'm on the fence regarding this. Like Ryota Igarashi, who will likely compete with Escobar to the Mets 8th inning man in 2010, the price tag is a sweet one, and if Escobar has a successful 2010 he'll make Omar look like a smarty-pants and earn the title "Bargain" for himself. However, that word “if” should be written with a permanent red marker, and underlined multiple times. This guy was good in 2007, winning 18 ballgames to the tune of a 3.40 ERA. This was the year Escobar really matured and turned a major corner in his career - the 10 seasons prior he was a career .500 pitcher with a "nothing to write home about 4.26 ERA. Escobar is a sad story, because right after the best season of his career he revealed in late March of 2008 that he had a torn shoulder. The injury was a major one. 15 months following his revelation Escobar returned by pitching in one solitary game for LA last season, earning the loss after tossing 5 innings of 2 run ball on 4 hits and 4 walks while striking out 5. 1 appearance over the past 2 seasons? This is a major league gamble here. The Mets have had major issues with the setup man role for a while now. I'm not asking for them to sign a superstar here, but I mean really now. Who knows what Igarashi is going to do in the United States, and who knows if the injury-plagued Escobar can even hang around an entire season. This isn’t exactly the type of hole-patching procedure I had in mind. Gambles, gambles, gambles. Omar Minaya has been gambling the 2010 season all winter long. He's not patching up holes with assured and tested products, but with bargain bin discounts instead. But the problem with these bargain bin dudes is that they're no guarantee to help the ballclub! In fact, Omar hasn't signed one man to a contract this year that is not a bit of a gamble. Alex Cora and Kelvim Escobar are coming off injury-riddled years. Henry Blanco had to have his whole entire contract restructured because the Mets aren't totally convinced he's 100% healthy. Igarashi is a mystery. R.A. Dickey and Chris Coste are coming off very poor seasons. And meanwhile the media and blogs get aggravated with us fans for being impatient with the way this offseason is turning out. Save it, why shouldn't we be angry? We're coming off an embarrassment of a season, jam packed with injuries all over the place, with our two biggest rivals headlining the World Series. I mean, what is going on here? Where is the improvement? We’re not keeping up with our rivals moves at all! I'm tired of these petty signings, heck they're not even good signings! All of the men that have signed with the Mets this winter are risky to the highest degree. Not one man listed above is assured to have a healthy, prosperous and successful season aiding the Mets to a World Series Championship this upcoming 2010. Why shouldn't we get frustrated? We've seen 2 collapses, an injury plagued joke of a season last year in a new ballpark completely void of Mets representation proving that the owners probably don't give a damn about any of us fans, just them and their money, and incredible regular seasons year in year out from the Yankees and the Phillies. No titles in 23 years, we have every right to be mad with the offseason direction. I am frustrated, I’m tired of seeing my team sit on the sidelines every October and watching other teams prosper. Our beloved ballclub is a laughingstock, and we're signing guys that have more of a chance of harming the team then helping it! I'll love the Mets til the day I'm underground, but I am frustrated with the state they're in. Thanks for hearing me out friends. I'm not sure if you're a more patient being than I am, or are also frustrated with the state of Metland. All I know is that last year was a miserable year baseball-wise for me. I mean at the end of the year I could’ve cared less whether the Mets won or lost, it was horrible how “out” they were. I don't want to feel that way again. But with these injury risks all flocking to the Mets, I am very apprehensive and very nervous that we'll wind up seeing a repeat. Just tell me one thing: Am I wrong to be aggravated with what the Mets have done up to this point? Not necessarily the lack of that big blockbuster signing, but rather with these little, trivial acquisitions that really are gambles when all is said and done? Let me know. Thank you my friends, thank you immensely. |
