Girls Basketball

Mary Louis Academy guard Karin Robinson bombarded the opposition with 30 points and 20 rebounds as the Hilltoppers defeated rivals Molloy 68-59 in Jamaica Estates on Saturday, January 30. With 20 of her points coming in the second half, the 5’6” guard helped stifle a late Molloy comeback. The Hilltoppers improved to 6-2 in the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) Division I, while Molloy fell to 4-4.

Boys Basketball

Rice shocked Cardozo High School in the SNY Invitational championship, overcoming a 19-point lead with 2:15 remaining in the third quarter en route to a 63-58 victory at Long Island University in Brooklyn on Saturday, January 30. The Raiders put on the full court press, forcing the Judges into 15 second-half turnovers and outscoring them 30-11 to force overtime. The loss marked Cardozo’s third defeat to a CHSAA team this season.

Cardozo will try to bounce back when they play their Queens ‘AA’ division rivals Forest Hills on Friday, February 5 at Forest Hills High School. The contest could have the added excitement of being for the division title if both teams win their two games leading up to Friday. Last year, Forest Hills and Cardozo split their regular-season series, and the Rangers went on to upset the Judges to win the Queens borough championship.

Christ the King defeated St. Peter’s Prep (N.J.), 75-72, in overtime at the Newark National Invitational on Saturday, January 30. The Royals only managed 23 points in the first half, but rallied from 11 points down in the third to force overtime. Sophomore guard Omar Calhoun led the Royals’ third quarter resurgence, scoring 11 of his team’s 24 points in the period.

For Christ the King High School, Super Bowl Sunday will have nothing to do with football as they host Rice High School at 3:30 p.m. in Middle Village. The Royals will be looking to exact a little revenge against Rice, who they last played and lost to in last year’s CHSAA ‘AA’ title game in the Bronx.
