Girls Track

As the school year winds down, Bayside High School’s Alaine Tate is running straight into college as she plans to sign a letter of intent to attend Virginia’s Hampton University on Friday, March 12. This comes on the heels of Tate capturing the championships in the 1000-meter and 1500-meter at the New York State Championships on Saturday, March 6. Tate is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation in the 800-meter with a time of 2:11.16. But it is not over for Tate as she will be competing at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships at the New Balance Armory Track and Field Center in Manhattan on Saturday, March 13.

Boys Basketball

Cardozo High School’s season ended in disappointing fashion as the No. 1 ranked Judges fell to Boys & Girls Academy, 55-50, in the Public School Athletic League (PSAL) Queens division ‘AA’ final at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, March 6. It was the Brooklyn program’s first title since 1979, as Kangaroos (19-2) coach Ruth Lovelace became the first female coach to lead a PSAL boys basketball program to a league championship. It was a heartbreaker of a loss for the Judges (19-3), as they lost a 10-point halftime lead and committed 24 turnovers, a flaw that plagued them all season long.

Men’s Baseball

After an impressive 6-0 start to their season, St. John’s dropped two in a row to East Tennessee State on Friday, March 5 and Saturday, March 6. In games that saw both teams display an intense offensive attack, the Red Storm came up short, losing by the combined score of 19-13. The series against the Buccaneers was not a total loss, as the Johnnies were able to win the first of the three game series. St. John’s, ranked No. 30 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), is now 7-2 in the young 2010 baseball season. Freshman outfielder Jeremy Baltz and senior outfielder Jimmy Prague have hit safely in all nine games for the Johnnies this season.
