AZIZ RAJI, LONG ISLAND CITY BOYS' BASKETBALL Senior guard Aziz Raji was the hero of Long Island City's two-point shocker over Campus Magnet on December 2, scoring 24 points over the defending Queens champions in an 81-79 win. While LIC has since slumped to a 2-4 league record, Raji has been scoring over 17 points per game. The Bulldogs' season-opening upset has a special place in his memory bank. Wednesday, June 24, 2009 2:31 PM EDTKnights' outing is chance to revel in spectacular season They say a strong sports season is the easiest way for a school to raise its endowment – which makes one wonder if the fundraising at Holy Cross High’s annual golf outing on June 22 was really about the annual golf outing. Either way, the alumni and benefactors attending Monday’s event could only detach themselves so far from one simple fact: The day marked the final chapter of a Holy Cross golf season beyond recent comparison. June 16th, 2009 It’s that time again. As the spring sports season come to a close, join The Courier as we look back over an eventful three months. Like last time, the words that follow are not meant to be an exhaustive referendum on the best in the borough; rather, their aim is to represent some highlights of The Courier’s high school coverage since March. Please join us as we reminisce. June 11th, 2009 Veteran racing fans and newcomers alike celebrated the 141st running of the Belmont Stakes and The Courier was trackside for the big event. It took the top-ranked soccer team in New York City – and it took penalty kicks – to stop the girls of Francis Lewis from making the city finals. They may have run away with the division thanks to a 16-0 regular season, but the members of the Benjamin Cardozo girls’ softball team had to conquer a few familiar foes before calling themselves New York City semifinalists. June 4th, 2009 Making program history by qualifying for the city soccer semifinals would typically be a cause for joy, and ultimately it was. After the final whistle sounded on Francis Lewis’ 2-0 win over Canarsie, the Patriots’ players hugged and jumped for joy and had to be reminded by head coach Roger Sarmuksnis to line up for post game handshakes. The largest NFL Flag Football program in Queens is right in Bayside at the DePhillips Athletic Club (DAC), and teams are forming now. With five age-based divisions and a 14-game season ranging from September to November, the program welcomes children ages five through 17. Running in the 141st Belmont Stakes are a few horses whose names might sound oddly familiar to off-and-on horse racing fans. The word “Bird,” for example, has manifested itself repeatedly in recent years – in Belmont favorite Mine That Bird, in competitor Summer Bird, and in 2004 champion Birdstone. Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird and jockey Calvin Borel will headline a field of 11 entries at the Belmont Stakes, on Saturday, June 6 – the oldest Triple Crown race – that has been contested nearly every year since 1867. They do not play baseball games on paper, but Doug Manfredonia couldn’t help but reveal a little astonishment after his fifth-ranked Knights were stunned by a No. 18 team in the CHSAA playoffs. June 3rd, 2009 June 1st, 2009 One of the most interesting tendencies sometimes followed when naming a thoroughbred horse is to combine the names of its parents. This was the topic of a story I wrote previewing the Belmont Stakes for this week's Courier. May 28th, 2009 The Benjamin Cardozo girls’ soccer team did not succeed in its planned 2009 coup of rival Bayside, but the Judges did help put the crown on someone else’s head. Thanks in large part to Cardozo’s tie with its neighborhood opponents on May 18, the Francis Lewis Patriots enter Tuesday’s PSAL playoffs as the top seed from the Queens ‘A-IV’ division. SYOSSET, N.Y. -- Ending both a memorable season and the accomplished career of starting pitcher Janelle Boyd, Archbishop Molloy’s softballers finally hit a wall on May 26. They were bounced by St. Joseph by the Sea in the state semifinals, and a colossal walk-off hit was largely responsible. May 27th, 2009 NAME: Nicholas Spadaccini May 26th, 2009 Halfway through the season, two hotly-contested tie games marked a busy week for Bayside Little League’s Vision Protection Services team. On May 15, against the Re-Action Auto Service Center team, remarkable play from both squads was highlighted by Vision Protection Services’ Shawn Edelstein, who knocked a few solid hits up the middle and flashed some infield leather worthy of a Baseball Tonight Web Gem. Teammate Theodore Symeonide performed well at the plate and in the field, in a manner that reminded some observers of Ozzie Smith. The two teams played to a tie and will have to settle their matchup another day. Three months into the introduction of a new technology to an old sport, instant replay appears to have taken a liking to the New York Mets. The Benjamin Cardozo girls’ soccer team did not succeed in its planned 2009 coup of rival Bayside, but the Judges did help put the crown on someone else’s head. Thanks in large part to Cardozo’s tie with its neighborhood opponents on May 18, the Francis Lewis Patriots enter Tuesday’s PSAL playoffs as the top seed from the Queens ‘A-IV’ division. Call it a rough week for Queens baseball: Two rounds into the PSAL ‘A’ playoffs, and all seven of the borough’s teams have been eliminated. May 22nd, 2009 Mitchell Wiener, the beloved IS 238 assistant principal who died May 17 after contracting swine flu, had always considered baseball a focal point of his life. He was a Mets fanatic, a Little League coach, a dad who drove son Jordan, a pitcher, to countless youth baseball games.
